What is a website?

A website is a way to present your business online. It is a place where anybody in the world can visit at any time of the day, and learn more about your business, your products or services, ask you questions, give you feedback, and even purchase your products online.

Why do I need a website?

More and more people are using the internet as a means of research - they can view a range of businesses providing the service or product they are seeking, and use that information in their purchasing decision. If you are not putting your company out there, these clients will simply go elsewhere.

You can use a website to provide products and services to a global audience. You can also use your site to provide additional, specific services to your clients, for example product specials, order management, newsletters etc.

How does a website work?

A website is simply a collection of files located on a server. When a user types in a domain name, a request is sent out from their computer out to the internet, which takes the domain name entered, and converts it to an IP address. The request then finds its way to the server that is hosting the website, which then sends back the requested file to the user's computer.

There's quite a few steps involved in getting a website to display in your browser, even though it looks simple, and happens very quickly!

HowStuffWorks has a great article on how web servers work.

What is a datacenter?

Multiple web servers are housed in units known as racks. These racks are located in rooms within a building called a datacenter. A typical datacenter has backup power, strict security and extremely fast, multiple connections direct to the internet backbone.

The Island Hosting servers are housed in the PIPE Networks datacenter which is based in Brisbane, Australia. More information about the data centre can be found here.

What is Web Hosting?

A web site needs to be hosted on a server that is connected to the internet. A web hosting server is a specialised machine that has similar components to a desktop computer but is designed to process requests for web sites (and should be a more robust machine). Web hosting packages will usually include an allocation of hard disk space on the server and a limit for data transferred to or from the site each month (traffic or transfer).

When investigating which hosting plan to choose, it's important to check how much data transfer you'll be allowed. Having a decent amount (1000mb is a great start) means that thousands of people can visit your website, without you having to worry that your account will be suspended. Of course, if your allowance is used, you'll want to move up to the next plan level, to ensure people can keep visiting your site.

What is Shared Hosting?

Connecting a server to the internet, administering the system and the cost of the server are expensive outlays. For most small business web sites, sharing these costs between other accounts on the server is an economic way to access a high performance web server without the high cost of a dedicated server. Unless your site has extremely large traffic requirements (such as serving digital images, sound files or videos) then shared hosting is the most efficient way to get your business online.

Why not just use my free ISP hosting?

You can if you want to. However, most ISPs only provide you with limited hard disk space (usually 5 or 10 mb) to create your site and would be unlikely to offer you features such as multiple email accounts, a control panel or add-on scripts. Our servers are located in a datacenter that specialises in web hosting, with redundant (i.e. multiple), direct connections to the internet backbone.

Also, with the free ISP hosting, you'll end up with a website address that looks like, which looks unprofessional.

What about other free hosting sites?

Free web hosting can be provided by sites such as Yahoo! or GeoCities. Most of these subsidise their free hosting by serving banner advertising on your web site. You will not usually be able to use your own domain name and the available resources are limited when compared with a business web hosting plan. Free web hosting is fine for personal web sites but businesses should look for a more professional solution.

The main difficulties with free services arise when the server goes down, and your site becomes unavailable - it's often quite hard to get any information about why the downtime is occurring (that is, if you're told), and individual support for your needs can be limited.

What is Linux Hosting?

Linux is a free, UNIX-like operating system that is commonly used on web servers in addition to desktop PCs. Linux has many advantages and you can read more about it at Linux Online. Unix-based web hosting supports scripting languages like PHP and Perl but is also compatible with Front Page Extensions.

Do you supply Windows Hosting?

No, we do not. Windows Hosting uses a different operating system and needs to run on separate servers. We don't supply Windows hosting as it is more expensive and at this stage we see no advantages to us in using this hosting platform. Many people think they need Windows web hosting as they have Microsoft Windows on their PC. This is not a good reason to use Windows hosting! If you need to use specific scripting languages such as ASP, Cold Fusion, .NET or Visual C++, then you should look for a host that uses Windows Servers.

What is a domain name?

Your Domain Name or web address signifies your own address on the Internet. It is a unique alphanumeric name used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet.

As no two parties may ever hold the same Domain Name at the same time, it is a truly unique identifier of you or your company. It is how your customers will remember you and find you among the millions of other Web sites on the Internet.

Why do I need a domain name?

Internet Domain Names are a rapidly diminishing commodity. They are allotted on a first-come first-serve basis.

They are important.

The Internet Domain Name has become a vital part of corporate identity.

In the 21st Century, your Domain Name will be as important as your trademark and your presence in a global marketplace.

They are versatile.

For example, any email addressed to you at can be forwarded to your current email address.

What should I consider when choosing a domain name?

Your domain name should reflect your business or company name, or even the product or services that you provide. It should be easy to remember, and easy to spell! Try saying the domain name out loud a couple of times, to get a feel for it. Domains with a hyphen in them (eg are not as easy to describe to someone - same with domains with a number in them.

Is the domain name I want available?

You can do a search for the domain name you'd like to register on this page.

Which extension (.com, etc) should I use?

If you are registering a domain name for a business or company, then the extension would be most suitable. Only registered businesses can use this extension.

It's also a good idea to purchase the .com version of your domain, as this protects that name from being used by others. People are often prone to forgetting to add the .au to the end of the domain, so it's a good safety measure as well.

Can I transfer my domain over to Island Hosting?

You certainly can transfer your domain over to us. If it is a .au domain, it is now free to transfer (unless it is close to renewal time, or you have just renewed it).

If it is an international domain (e.g. .com, .net etc) you will need to pay for 1 year's registration in order to transfer it.

Can I get a refund if I no longer want it?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to give a refund if you no longer require the domain name. You would simply let the registration period expire, and not renew it.

What if I make a spelling mistake when registering my domain?

We strongly suggest you carefully check the domain name that you are purchasing, as it is not possible to give refunds on purchased domains.

If you did make a mistake, you would have to register the correctly spelled domain, in addition to the misspelled domain.
